These are among the titles I've given my works.
Do names matter?
Do art works speak for themselves?
Yes, a work should be able to stand without a title, but I love giving them names.
A rose by any other name may smell as sweet, but will it conjure up desired associations if say Romeo were named Rufus or the flower called by its Latin version?
My titles give a clue as to my intent.
My titles on a practical level help me remember which one is which and what I entered in a given show, sold to whom, and what someone wants a print of.
I also on occasion have begun a work with a title in mind.
Meditations on a lotus II began as I thought about meditation, my need for it, the lotus as a symbol, and reflecting. Looking at this I am considering a watercolor version. But the title kept me in check as to what I was intending to paint did indeed match up with my message.
And your thoughts? How do you name painting,s drawings, songs - or if not creating them - recall them?
